Apparition: a supernatural appearance, a ghost; a spectre or phantom; an act of appearing or being visible; supernatural manifestation, epiphany. 15th C; Middle English, borrowed from Anglo-French & Medieval Latin
This collection was informed by materials already in my possession, excess from prior custom orders or trimmed during alterations, with one fabric dating as far back to a school millinery project.
Historical fiction reigns over my reading and watching habits. I love ghost stories and listened to horror romance audiobooks while constructing these pieces- Crimson Peak and Poe’s Ligeia stand out. But my work is for brides of today and tomorrow, historical reference while staying shy of a period-specific costume. A touch of gothic romance, not so structured and laced (which I do appreciate and is having a moment), but the fluidity and transparencies of a spectre - fitting for a collection developed from remains. I’m conservative with material use and part of this brand is revival- creating something new from scraps of other gowns, excess from alterations or bespoke work, end-cuts and dead stock from other designers, materials that have been discontinued or sourced from vintage shops, older garments and heirlooms. Besides the environmental implications, I enjoy the resuscitation - extending a story.
Maybe that doesn’t feel so traditionally bridal- but what’s more romantic than eternity? Love that isn’t until death, but beyond.
